Meet Wren

Wren is an android robot who resembles a human but is not one. He observes the behavior of humans in an attempt to mimic their behavior by taking tools to his control panel and configuring himself to fit in with other humans at the cost of the detriment of denying himself. His character is an allegory for autism and masking behaviors that are used for survival when fitting in with others, which is heightened in environments where money is on the line such as workplaces, schools, or networking events.

Artist's Statement

Fascinated by people's relationship with technology, I explore the ways that relationship can be toxic for human wellness and build inventions and artwork that heals this relationship. Capitalism has incentivized web services to be as addictive as possible, mainly social media, designed to keep you and spend as much screentime as possible on the app or website. This has ramifications on agency and human behavior that the general public are increasingly growing aware of. Yet, we are still addicted to the technology that binds us and that society is reliant on. Therefore, it might be considered punk to take a deliberate effort to move away from using our devices in ways that control our behavior. An alternative to accepting what is availible to consume, is to customize, control, and use technology in ways that are suited to our needs which we can decide. I want to encourage people to not just accept what is availible as decided by what is on the market controlled by a company engineering human behavior with algorithms. I want people to evaluate their relationship with technology and consider if they are choosing what they want or if they are defaulting to decicions made for them. I want to expose people to the idea of becoming inventors and participators rather than just consumers. Taking agency might look like using an offline music player or owning media. Or using or making devices that are catered to your needs that you know yourself for. Researching and understanding what you need for yourself. Open source technology.
